My passion is making music and instruments. Hands-on
experimentation is how I work and learn best. Earl Scruggs' book
on banjos was my first inspiration with it's directions in the back
on how to build a banjo. Early on I sought out Harry Tuffs and Scott
Baxendale of the Denver Folk Lore Center where I now work in the
repair shop. I gratefully studied with Scott on repair and instrument
construction techniques. Other influences that impact my instruments
are Gretch's western style guitars, classic Art Deco creations of
Stromberg and De'Angeleco, and the Telecasters. I am excited to
announce a formal partnership with my brother Bill Rumley. He received
his MFA from the University of Denver and is the Woodshop Director
for the Department of Art and Art History at CU Boulder where he
teaches a string instrument making course. He has 30 years of experience
working as an artist, museum preparator, and educator. My instruments
are used by artists on recordings such as: Sixteen Horsepower, Slim
Cessna's Auto Club, The Ladonnas, Munly, Woven Hand, The Dalhart
Imperials, and the Pork Boilin Poor Boys, with special mention to
Bob Ferbrache at Le Studio Absenta. Our work can be seen at http://www.rumleyarts.com.
