Like so many other luthiers, I got started in guitar
building by wanting a guitar that I could not afford so decided
to build my own. In 1972, armed with Irving Sloane's book on classical
guitar construction, I built my first guitar. Then I decided I needed
a steel string guitar and started looking for information on the
building of such an instrument. Fortunately, I contacted NBN Guitars
in Longmont, and they offered to let me work with them part time
on weekends. The time I spent working with them was very informative
and rewarding and, from that point on, I was really hooked. For
the next 30 odd years I continued building as time would allow.
In Jan of 2001 I retired and finally have had the time to devote
to building in earnest. To date, I have constructed more that 50
stringed instruments including classical, steel string and arch
top guitars, mandolins, banjos, ukes, folk harps and bouzoukis.
I learn something new with each new instrument I complete and plan
to keep developing my skills as a luthier in the future.
