Howard Slavin & Doug Switzer
Howard Slavin is a "hippie from the 60's" who grew up in the
New
York City "folk" and "rock" scene. As a teen he played
the college
circuit and either solo, or with his band "Captain Jet and the Amazing
Electric Space Commandos", performed on the same bill with the likes
of Jackson Browne, Tom Rush and the Blue Oyster Cult. His musical
career was interrupted by post-graduate studies and a second career,
but music has remained an essential thread in his life. He has studied
jazz either clinically or privately with notables, including guitarists
Dale Bruning and Ron Eschete. He performs regularly with Doug
Switzer, the Colorado Jazz Workshop, as well as other artists
Doug Switzer has been playing jazz guitar since the mid-70's in
various settings from duos to big bands. He has performed at locations
throughout the mid-west including the "Bop Shop" in Chicago.
He has
studied privately with guitarists Dale Bruning and Tal Farlow, and with
alto saxophonist Lee Konitz. He has also attended master classes
conducted by guitarists Joe Pass, Herb Ellis and Chuck Wayne.
Collectively, Howard and Doug have over 60 years of guitar playing
experience. They have performed individually, in different formats,
at venues around the country but particularly enjoy the guitar duo.
The duo offers a format for the musician that is unique in music. It
gives the player a level of freedom that is not possible in larger groups
and provides the backing that is missing in solo performance. It opens
the music up and provides room for interaction and a dialog that at
times can be astonishing to both the player and the listener.
In 2001 Howard and Doug released their first CD together, Bop,
Blues and Bossa. Howard reflected, In this CD weve tried
to
capture the feeling of our live performance. Most of the recording was
done in one take, with a minimum of studio enhancements. Our goal
was to create intimate portraits of the music we love, and believe this
to be the essence of jazz.
